How can I convince my parents to let me learn to play guitar?

I’m 14 and I want to learn to play guitar. I used to play viola but no one cares about that instrument. I quit it after 3 years. I asked my parents once before and they said I’m not going to really focus on it. Also, I’m going to high school so I won’t have any time to practice. Can you please give me advice on how to convince them and how to make time for practicing?

My parents wouldn’t let me play guitar either. They said that I would quit after a few weeks. They eventually gave in, and I’ve been playing for 7 years now. My advice is ask for a guitar for your birthday or whatever holiday, or just save up for one. There’s tons of online sites that can teach you tons of techniques and songs. Most of what I know, I learned by myself.

Most music programs in schools are being cut left and right. This includes guitar classes. When I was in high school (millions of years ago!) there were guitar classes at most schools. If your school is lucky enough to still have one then try to get into it. If not, then tell your parents that you would be willing to take lessons at a local music store. This will let them know that you are serious about learning. Guitar is a great instrument to develop all around musical appreciation. It requires a minimum of 30 minutes a day to learn and improve. Most students eventually put in an hour a day or more and will find the time for it because they enjoy it so much. You parents should consider that if you are playing the guitar that you are NOT playing video games or going to questionable websites, or talking/texting on your phone all afternoon! Keep bugging them about it. They are only turning you down now because they want to see if you are really interested or if it is just another fad. This begs the question; why do you want to play guitar? (they will ask , so I will to) Do you really want to learn to play because you are interested in it and think it is fascinating? OR do you just want to do it because you think it will make you “cool” and popular? (hint: answer one is the correct answer!)
