This is nuclear fusion which is the reaction taking place in the sun with hydrogen nuclei and which is used in the hydrogen bomb. Harnessing this for peaceful purposes is an ongoing challenge.

For a net energy gain (required to keep the reaction going), anything up to Iron.
It’s not very easy – you really have to squeeze the atoms together, and there is a tendency for the energy released to get out of control (for example, in a ‘Hydrogen Bomb’ 🙂 )
For an example of a successful continuous fusion reaction, just look up** on any sunny day == the Sun is fusing mainly Hydrogen (plus a tiny bit of Helium, I believe) ..)
