How do you train a dog to use a potty pad when they are trained to go outside?

I have trained my dog to go to the bathroom outside, however when I have to go to work I can’t leave her by herself I have to have someone at the house with her because she won’t use a potty pad, she will tear it up out of anger before she will ever use it. Is there anyway to train to her to use the pad when it is available to her?

I think you will just confuse her by doing this. You’re lucky she is housebroken, why take the chance of messing this up. Can’t you crate her? She should be able to hold it for the time you are gone, unless she is small and you are gone for over 10 hours.

    I wouldn’t advise doing that.
Pee Pads really only send the message that it is ok to pee in the house.

Try crating her or either you or someone else come home during the day to let her outside if she can’t hold it.

Placing her in a crate when you leave is the most ideal solution to your problem. You’re actually lucky as some dogs are difficult to housetrain and only eliminate inside.

A dog who has been trained to only go outside will not “get” the concept of wee-wee pads.

It would be a step backwards … your dog understands that she is only to relieve herself outside … telling her it’s OK to go inside will give her the message that it’s OK to go inside wherever she wants! That’s not what you want her to understand.

The answer is to crate her or confine her to a small room where she can neither cause damage nor hurt herself.

i agree with the other answers a cratee is your best bet but if youreallyy have to the get grassscentedd wee-wee pads good luck.

There are some interesting points in time in this article but I don’t know if I see all of them center to heart. There is some validity but I will take hold opinion until I look into it further. Good article , thanks and we want more! Added to FeedBurner as well
